Lombok and the Gili Islands: Lombok, Bali’s next neighbor to the east, is often referred to as “Bali 20 years ago”, but in fact it has quite a distinct character of its own. Easily reached by a 20-minute flight or by several high-speed catamarans, it offers a number of international-standard hotels along its famous Senggigi beach, as well as several smaller boutique resorts further towards the north and a luxury resort on its southern Kuta beach. The Sengiggi Art Market, traditional villages, pottery and weaving workshops complete the picture. The Gili Islands, a cluster of three small isles off the northwest coast, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air boast a variety of accommodation types, from guesthouses and bungalow hotels to a boutique resort. Tropical crystal-clear waters surround these islands which are the ideal choice for snorkeling and some scuba diving.
